Chapter 5 - Brainwashing
This brainwashing starts early. Hip hop culture glorifies it. It's legal and readily available in stores all over North America. Many states in the US have legalized it. Where its illegal, everybody still knows somebody who has some. Marijuana's prevalence suggests it must be harmless.
Some try scaring people away, but fear tactics backfire. Listing marijuana's health risks logically should stop use, but it doesn't. Even concerned groups like D.A.R.E. don't deter most new users.
Ironically, marijuana users are their own worst brainwashers. They see themselves as weak or boring without it. But addiction takes strength - non-addicts lack the determination to obtain and sustain regular use.
Willpower backfires too. Trying to resist gradually depletes willpower needed in other areas like work and relationships. Failures there lead to stress and relapse.
Fear keeps people from quitting - fear of that empty, restless feeling when you stop the dopamine surge of marijuana. You don't need to understand this feeling, just that smoking temporarily relieves it.
We're brainwashed to think quitting requires "giving up" something. But there's nothing to give up! This implies genuine sacrifice. In fact, you'll gain health, money, confidence, and freedom when marijuana no longer controls you.
We start using because it's common, so we assume it must be enjoyable. Marijuana users think "It can't be that bad if so many people do it." Even people they look up to do it. "What's the harm in just one puff?" But we rapidly become trapped.
The addiction slowly convinces you marijuana is needed to enjoy or cope with life. Withdrawal manifests as boredom, stress, depression, lack of focus - times you crave smoking. This brainwashing increases as dependence grows.
You aren't aware of the control marijuana takes until you try quitting. "I smoke because I enjoy it" quickly becomes "I can't stop, so maybe I'm addicted." Even then, denial is strong.
This trap operates subtly. But the time investment, stigma around use, and health impacts prove marijuana takes more than it gives. Smokers avoid activities where they can't light up, rearrange lives around getting high.
Modern culture romanticizes marijuana, but what has it added to your life? Aside from briefly relieving withdrawals, what do those countless hours lost in smoke do for you? Absolutely nothing, except keep you trapped!
The only way out is exposing marijuana brainwashing. To permanently quit, you need to...
See the illusion of marijuana as relaxing and enjoyable
Recognize it only relieves the dependence it causes
Reprogram away from years of cannabis conditioning
This rewiring isn't easy after decades of pro-marijuana messaging. But each chapter moves you closer to clarity. Stay strong through the confusion and you'll break free.
